Payne's Gray
Taking a short break from my current illustration project. Watercolor doodle on a scrap of watercolor paper, using Payne's Gray, Alizarin Crimson and a little bit of Quinacridone Magenta. Payne's Gray is pretty much my favorite watercolor color, which is odd, considering that it's gray, but it's a very lovely blue-gray.

A Peek at My Picture Book Dummy
Here's another snippet from my picture book dummy. The benefit of
working on a Chinese-themed book is that I was able to sneak my last
name into this image.

A little bit of what I'm working on
This is a little snippet from the picture book dummy I'm working on... done in watercolor, pencil, and colored pencil on Arches watercolor paper.

Princess painting experiment
This is a color experiment that I'm not quite sure about. I like a lot of the elements separately, just not sure they are working well together.

Some miniature portrait paintings
I did these two little portraits recently for a friend's birthday. They are in little metal frames that I purchased years ago somewhere in the American Southwest; they have a glass door that is open for the purposes of photographing them.

Still Tweaking
Ever trying to refine my style... I made some subtle changes to this one. I added some shading in colored pencil and graphite to give it a little more depth and texture. I think I like it better. The old version is here.

Watercolor self portrait
It was self portrait day in watercolor class. We did a project in which we took a photograph of ourselves and gridded it off, then drew an identical grid on our watercolor paper. We had two index cards with 1" squares cut out of the center. As we painted, we put one card over one square on our photograph, and another card over the same square on our painting, and painted exactly what we saw in that square. Thus, my face is broken into 1" squares. It did come out amazingly accurate, though.

Watercolor fruit

I am taking a watercolor class in order to improve my skills. Our week 2 assignment was a fruit still life. I'm fairly happy with the results. Normally painting a still life bores me to death, but I can see why it's a good exercise. And I must say, I have always read that using good paper makes a big difference, and I always sort of scoffed at that idea, but now I must admit I am a convert to Arches watercolor paper.
